Why anxiety is our greatest teacher

Do you know this feeling, when anxiety dominates your life? This was the case for me. I stood still. My anxiety has paralyzed me, I could no longer think. I turned in a circle. The same disaster-scenarios over and over again.

For example I’m scared of:

  • Uncertainty
  • New things
  • Change
  • Powerlessness
  • Failure
  • Loss
  • Rejection
  • Disappointment
  • and pain.

In the meantime, I’ve learned to deal with my anxiety in a positive way.

First, I saw fear as an obstacle. She held me back, slowed me down. But at some point, I realized that there is a different way to look at it. Anxiety can be seen as our teacher, because it only shows where our limitations are.

♦If you are not afraid, you can not be brave!♦

What has really helped me was to become aware of my anxiety. Yes, I’m afraid. A simple sentence, but difficult to admit. Then I felt it in my body, appreciated and accepted it completely. I said to it: Yes, you are welcomed in my life.

In these difficult moments, when you have no access to your feelings, it has helped me to change the perspective of the mental level.

So I asked myself the following:

  • What do I want to do?
  • How can I solve the problem ?
  • Which abilities, skills, technical requirements and knowledge do I have?
  • What do I have already? and what do I still need?
  • What concrete steps  do I have to go to get there?
  • Who has already successfully accomplished my goal?
  • What can I learn from them?

Right now, I am faced with a profound decision in my life. What do I do after my studies? Do I invest all my energy into my heart project or do I do just something, where I earn money but  the work is no fun?

But this either-or decision, this black-white, true-false, good-evil – thinking doesn’t really take us forward.

Maybe there is a option that combines both…

I learn from people, what I’ve always wanted to learn and earn a bit of money there. In addition, I have the time to apply the acquired know-how to realize my own project.

This sounds marvellous, doesn’t it? What do you think about that?

Let me know your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

I’d love to her from you, until then

Yours Heiko
